I Heart Yakima

Hi y'all.

You know what we really love? Businesses and people innovating to make this town of ours a great place to live. We especially gravitate towards those who are inclusive, strive for excellence, are open, and generous.

We're continuing to seek out like-minded businesses and brands who are just as dedicated to loving our town – and all the people in it – as we are.

This month, we visited with Iron + Mortar, and Lauren went on a little jaunt to Naches. We hope you enjoy reading all about it.

In local love,
Bridget Russel, Lauren Lizardo, Jessica Hawkins

HEART-NERSHIP: IRON + MORTAR
Iron + Mortar

Imagine our sheer delight when we recently were introduced to the team at Iron + Mortar: Brendan and Ashley Loyer (husband and wife owners), and Layci Nelson (general manager and nutrition coach).

While it’s past New Year’s Resolution time, it’s never too late to find ways to move our bodies. Finding the right place to help you do that can be daunting. Brendan and Ashley opened Iron + Mortar in 2017 with a dedication to helping anyone who walks through their door realize their potential and improve their quality of life. They are a hybrid functional fitness facility that offers CrossFit classes, personal training, and individual program design -- from nutrition to customized fitness goals.

Why do we heart them? Well, first of all, their gym is impeccable. It’s clean, it’s warm, it’s kid-friendly, and it’s – dare we say – beautiful. Scrolled in giant letters on the wall: "Better in here, great out there."

And they heart Yakima. The Loyers wax poetic about why they decided to stay long-term. Amongst their reasons: our “beautiful landscape, the food and beverage scene, and the diverse people of Yakima that come from all walks of life,” says Ashley.

Stay tuned for a big, collaborative effort they will be announcing soon (think Memorial Day weekend). We share the ethos that collaboration is the cornerstone to anything that is successful, and an integral part of making our community better together.

Iron + Mortar, we have a crush on you!

THE LOVE LIST: LAUREN'S PICKS
MAK Daddy Coffee Roasters
1. My heart is aflutter for the pour-over coffee at MAK Daddy Coffee Roasters. I’m not supposed to drink too much coffee, so when I do, it helps when 1) the beans are sourced from small, independent growers from around the world, 2) they are roasted locally, and 3) the coffee is delish. To boot, a proper pour-over takes time, so I get a moment to breathe and enjoy the MAK Daddy shop vibe while I wait.

2. All the new and old things in Naches have me smitten. My friend and I sipped delicious drinks and a tasty Cubano at newcomer restaurant, Nier the Nook (FYI, their bar is stocked with all the local and regional goods). We hopped across the street to Sticky Fingers for some sweet treats. We made friends with the cutest, biggest puppy and we spied D’Nile Tap House but decided to save it for the next time we return. I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of bike rides out there soon. Photo: Nier the Nook

3. Spring may be delayed, but it hasn’t stopped me from daydreaming about trailer travels after the snow melts. My go-to app for inspiration: Harvest Hosts. Harvest Hosts never fails to deliver with its network of unique places to overnight park for FREE (think: farm, winery, distillery, brewery, museum, etc.). What’s not to LOVE about that?! There are hosts right here in the Yakima Valley. Warning: this app may cause spring-fever. Photo: Harvest Hosts
