Don't Google it Challenge. Q: What was Yakima’s voter turnout percentage in the last presidential election?

Issue #042
A love letter from I Heart Yakima
October 22, 2020

Winter is coming.

Well, for a day this week, anyway. Check your water pipes and bundle up! This cold snap is a reminder that it can’t be delightfully warm forever, and that we’re all about to move inside. Also, big thank you to all for embracing masks! They will continue to play a big role in keeping our community safe and keeping our businesses open for the winter season.

Even with a pandemic still afoot, there are great things to shout about in Yakima. Here’s who we’re following and cheering for this week:

Visit: Tomorrow (Friday the 23rd), the Yakima Food Guy is doing a kitchen takeover at Cowiche Creek Brewery. He’s going to be sharing his full menu on the Instagram, but we do know for sure that he’ll have his “drive-in” burgers, hot honey tender dogs, and “late night” grilled cheese. We know where we’ll be tomorrow evening.  Photo: The Yakima Food Guy Insta
Shop: Have you seen this adorable new shop in Glenwood Square? The Planted Home is both a plant shop and the design office for owner Timi Nugent. Need a succulent for a naked counter in your kitchen? She’s got it. How about a plant for that corner of your living room that feels empty? She’s got that, too. Hours are not regular, so make sure you call ahead before your trip. Or just peruse how pretty it is on your next trip to Xochimilco, Zesta Cucina, or The Pub. Photo: The Planted Home Insta
Read: We love to support local, and that includes local journalism. We were thrilled to see that the Yakima Valley is one of four communities that will be supported by Microsoft, as part of a pilot program to preserve local newsrooms. Recently, The Yakima Herald Republic and has been focusing on voting in the Valley – including endorsements and comparisons for our local races. So helpful, especially if you’re not quite sure which way to choose. We were especially thrilled to see that the Yakima County Auditor is projecting 80% turnout this election. You know what would be cool? Let’s get to 90%. (Subscribe online to the Herald – it helps).

Do: VOTE. Drop that ballot at a blue mailbox, red ballot dropboxes (there are more than 15 in the county – find one near you). While you’re at all, tell everyone how much you love democracy with a #VOTEYAKIMA shirt* – our collab with the wonderful folks at Hogback Development. You can find them at The Yakima Ship Shop, or online, at our newly redesigned online shop (much more merch coming your way in time for the holidays – we’ll keep you posted).
*Proceeds will benefit the Henry Beauchamp Community Center. The Center's mission is to provide a variety of services aimed at fostering self-sufficiency and dignity for children, youth and families, and affirming diversity in culture and way of life for residents of southeast Yakima.
