You can peruse their menu and pics here. There's something for everyone and they are the kindest. Call ahead for pick up! (509) 965-9544.

Drink.

Bubble tea from Joy Garden! 😉 We like the honeydew. And mango. And peach.

Shop.

Yakima's Ship Shop. Stop by to ship stuff out and put together a box for your favorite Yakimaniac who lives far away. YSS shelves are stocked with all sorts of local things: pretzels, cards, candy, wine, cider, and IHY merch (we're running low, but there are a few things on the racks!). Owner Nicholas or his trusty staff will help you out with the best way to ship things out.

Do good.

Collab Coffee. Have some coffee delivered to medical and other offices on the frontlines of COVID-19.

Admire.

Artist, Jamaica Zoglman. We have long enjoyed Jamaica's IG feed of her illustrations and musings. You can also check out her store and gallery here. We say go old school, buy some of her cards and send out handwritten notes to those you are thinking of.

When it's Mother's Day weekend

Eat.

We spied the Soup R Dawgs trailer in the parking lot next door to Fruit City in Union Gap and stopped for a snack. We kinda wish we didn't because now we can't stop thinking about the deliciousness that is Soup R Dawgs.

We ordered Chicago-style dogs. They added a couple of pickled asparagus for some local flare. One bite and we were sold. When we pressed Deb and Stan - owners - on how they serve up the perfect dog (they have three kinds), the only thing they would say is that it was two years of research and local produce from their Fruit City neighbors. Awesome, and we'll be heading back to work our way down the menu.

Pro-tip: go to Pepp'rmint Stick Drive-in for a shake after or before. We won't judge.

Need more Union Gap in your life? We hear you. Here's a list.

Drink.

Meraki Creations has Cocktail Kits for Mother's Day Brunch. Nier the Nook has cocktails to go available (and awesome specials like Lobster Mac and Smoked Prime Rib).

And if cocktails aren't your thing, we vote for a Vita Smoothie at Vida Health Bar.

Shop.

The Dagdagan farmstand (located just before Kyle's Corner, heading south on Lateral A) has all the things: fresh produce, starter plants, potted flowers, pinto beans, honey, peanuts, nice people, and an upgraded register area with plexiglass. They are super stocked for Mother's Day weekend. We are on the hunt for pepper plants and they have them ALL.

Bonus: the drive down Lateral A is a beauty.

Learn.

Free, live line dancing lessons online, hosted by Nick and Rene. Get yourself in tip-top shape for when the real thing can happen at the Wenas Creek Saloon. Since no one is looking, we are so giving this a try.

Art+.

We are great admirers of Aislinn of watered.down.art. Her IG feed is dreamy and if you are on the lookout for a special Mother's Day card, you might still be able to score one from the McIlrath curbside pickup. Check out Aislinn's online store and order yourself some stickers, cards, or an illustration. Or, just admire her work.

When you're not a baker

We are seeing a lot of sourdough starter out there on the social media channels. Are you doing it? While you’re waiting for all to rise, we suggest doing some cooking.

Shawn Niles - aka the Fat Pastor - posted his clam chowder recipe for the internet to have and to hold. Also, his King Crab rolls. And more. Procure the ingredients for when your sourdough is ready. His recipes are posted on his FB + IG pages. Follow the pics! Tell him how it turns out.

Drink.

April would have been Spring Barrel Wine Tasting. Since that didn’t happen, we say curbside pickup and go virtual to celebrate our beautiful wine country.

Justin Neufeld of JB Neufeld wine has been geeking out during live, virtual tastings on Zoom. Connect with the winemaker himself, order some of their wine, and follow their IG account for details about their next virtual tasting.

Need more? Wine Yakima Valley has your back. They are curating a calendar of virtual tastings from local wineries here.

Celebrate.

Essencia Artisan Bakery celebrated their 17th anniversary in business this month + Collab Coffee turned ONE. Who’d we miss?

Stop by Essencia and pick up some bread if you’re not the breadmaking type. Or their AMAZING cinnamon rolls - wowza. And Collab Coffee is delivering coffee to medical and other offices on the frontlines. Order some coffee for them today. They also have other things for sale on their online store.

Stretch.

Local yoga studio, the Yoga Practice, is offering free yoga on their YouTube Channel. If you need a giggle, we recommend the Stretchy Legs episode.

The Yoga Collective of Yakima is also going live on the regular on their Facebook page. They are donation only.

And, Renú Hot Yoga is also offering live streams and have a special going on for 2 weeks of unlimited live stream classes for $20. If you’ve been curious about yoga, virtual is a great way to get a flavor!

Art+.

We are following Tommy over on the Yakima Valley Museum FB page. We’re also enjoying their Throwback Thursday series.

Engrained Wood Designs has some cool painting and building kits available for the old and young alike. We missed out on the DIY corn hole kit. Don’t let that be you. Give them a follow or a message.

When we can hug

The Spin.
What do you do when your long-awaited grand opening date gets side-swiped by a pandemic? If you’re Starcycle Yakima owner Dana Ward, you regroup, and take care of your community. Starcycle rented out their spin bikes to members, and now offers three free live rides daily via Instagram Live. And wow. Talk about a sweat sesh.

The Starcycle Yakima team also have plans to create Insta workouts for people without a spin bike at home, so we all can keep moving and come out of quarantine like “COVID-20 Lbs what?”

Meet you there for a post-ride sweaty hug soon. (And bring your kids – they will have childcare available.)

The Climb.
We’ve been following along with High Steppe Climbing Center since they announced their business last year. With construction nearly complete, we wait patiently to get our climb on. Give their Insta a follow so you can stalk their progress and announcements.

And while one of us may be slightly scared of heights, you can bet we’ll be there, learning to climb and/or boulder with our kids and friends when we can all workout together again.

The Beer.
Oh, the lovely excitement of TWO new tap rooms in Downtown Yakima!

The Bier Den – in the Hittle Building – and The Tap – a hip self-serve-taproom next to The Tieton– were both on track to open this spring. We all know the familiar story, and both are waiting.

With both businesses occupying space in buildings that have recently been redeveloped, we cannot wait to cheers to their openings in their beautiful new spaces when we can go out together again.

The Art.
Mighty Tieton has our undying devotion, as always.

Traditionally at this time of year, Upper Valley teachers submit art from their K-12 students for the annual Tieton Arts & Humanity’s Student Art Show. Now that distance learning is the status quo and art-making in the home is more present than ever, they are changing things up.

Parents and students (from all over the Valley) were invited to directly submit their art for a virtual art show over at tietonarts.org and all over the Mighty Tieton social media channels (IG + FB) with a gallery opening at a later date, TBD.

Also, Collab Coffee is hosting, "How We Cope," a virtual gallery of pieces created during our time apart, but together. First piece is up right here.

We're looking forward to checking out art together again soon, until then, doing it virtually together is the next best thing.

The Enchiladas.
In mid-March, Erik's The Mercedes Kid, quietly opened at 7 N. Front Street. The timing didn't deter Erik. He opened and started delivering. He's slinging all the family dishes - the enchiladas, sopitos, tortas, tamales, and more! Give him a ring and put in an order for pickup. Your stomach will thank you. We can't wait to eat together again in Erik's new space.

Everyday is small business saturday

📷: Provisions Restaurant + Market/IG

Food. Pacific Northwest Fresh and McIlrath Family Farms produce boxes have been our go-tos to balance out our COVID-19 eating (raise your hand if this is you, too 🙋). We can get local goods (think bread, milk, beer, coffee, honey, local meat, etc.) from both, so we add-on as needed. They differ slightly in offerings, but both deliver, and McIlrath has pick-up options.

Provisions Market is where we go for treats, like fancy cheese, ice cream, and pickled stuff. They are also ordering bulk items for you if you’re short on things. Check out their FB page (it's public so no need for a Facebook account to access) for the latest offerings and how to order. Also, order some takeout from the restaurant while you're shopping. (Maximum comfort dish: Chef Lindsay's Mac & Cheese.) Ask about their specials.

Celebrate. Join our friends at Fortuity Cellars (Wapato) next Friday (4/10), at their “We’re Not Going to Let the Coronavirus Stop Us from Celebrating Virtual Winery Opening Party' – aka Fortuity’s Virtual Opening Party! They'll have music, swag, and more.

Details here. Congrats Fortuity! We can't wait to visit!

Outside. The Yakima Arboretum, Yakima Greenway, and Cowiche Canyon Conservancy collaborated to make a special resource for getting outside during this time. Check it out here. Our backyard is the best.

Help. Want to help, but don't know where to start? We've got ideas. There is a blood bank shortage. Virginia Mason Memorial has a list of things they need, and there’s Yakima Valley Needs, which is a site dedicated to local nonprofit needs (if you or someone you know has an excess of canned or dried goods, definitely check out this list).

Music. Isaac Gambito of Jayleigh Ann and The Lost Boys has been posting past performances and going live on IG every once in a while, making us feel like we’re out at Cowiche Creek Brewing, eating some Huck and Bean ice cream, hanging out on the grass and listening to them jam. Only we are still in our pajamas, staring at a tiny screen, and trying to decide between making vegetables or ordering a pizza for delivery. 🤦

Biz Support. Are you a brick and mortar Washington State small business owner and want to monitor your business from home? Seattle’s Wyze is giving out free webcams to you. They have limited inventory, but they are donating thousands of cameras on a first-come, first-serve basis over the next several days. Check it out here.

Loving from a distance

📷: The Salt and Stone/IG

In this time of uncertainty and standing 6 feet away from each other, we are all bound to feel a bit anxious in the midst of our sprints of calmness. Here are some things we've been doing to take care of ourselves and the community.

Video and phone chats. Facetime, Skype, Zoom with friends and family for a catch-up. Dial a number, don't send a text, give your great aunt an old-school phone call and ask her what she's doing to prepare for spring. She'll love it!

Cook all the food. Andrea McCoy's food blog, Salt and Stone, is our go-to for local inspiration and straightforward, delicious recipes. Also, her Instagram feed will make you hungry.

Support our local economy. Buy gift certs from any of our locally-owned restaurants. Our beloved restaurants are feeling the pain because we're at home cooking all the food when we would normally be indulging. When you buy a gift cert from them, you put cash in their pocket today AND you invest in a future meal to celebrate life after COVID-19. You can order takeout. Also, we have a growing number of local stores who have online stores if you have a hankering for some online shopping.

Get outside. This is a perfect time to go for a hike in Cowiche Canyon, check out the snowshoeing trails up at White Pass, go for a walk in your neighborhood, get your bike tuned and get on the Yakima Greenway.

Take care of our healthcare providers. Many of us have folks in our lives who are at the forefront of the pandemic, overseeing the public's worries, sniffles, the serious stuff, and the mundane things, too. Check in on them, buy them some ice cream, take out their trash, bake them something ya found on Salt and Stone.

Read and Listen to books. The Yakima Valley Libraries has ebooks and audiobooks available for online checkout for free!

Help your neighbors and parents with technology. Show them how to use Instacart, setup their accounts, walk them through an order. Practice video calls with them. Figure out if they have online access to talk to medical professionals through video, like telehealth through Regence Blue Shield. Help them download an audiobook from the library.

When you want to work out

A tip from our heart to yours: Stop by the YMCA and ask about how your health insurance can possibly cover or supplement your membership fee. We were surprised that we qualified for a discount at not only the Y, but other local gyms like Volution, Achieve, Pro-Motion Functional Fitness, and more. Get ahead of the New Year's resolutionists!

P.S. If you have not yet joined or toured the new Y, stop by. The new facility is a fantastic addition to our community. We especially enjoy seeing all the kids using the basketball courts and pools.

Premier Fitness Studio

Team I Heart Yakima works out at a lot of places, but for our Pilates, and overall CORE workout needs, Premier Fitness Studio is our go-to. Owners Ken and Jackie have created a low-key, friendly gym where all fitness levels can find a class (they offer more than Pilates), some inspiration, and a familiar face. Bridget gives a thumbs up to spin (Cy-Core) and Pilates mat and jump, and Lauren likes a classic Pilates Reformer class or a treadmill workout when it's too dark and cold to run outside. There's no fancy locker room or supplements, and we are A-OKAY with that. We crush on the community, teachers, and Larkin, the studio dog, who sometimes makes an appearance and slows everything down with his cuteness. Want to try it out? Every Monday, there is a Pilates Intro class where you get the basics and an overview of the studio. You can sign up online or drop them an email. It's FREE. No previous Pilates experience req'd.

Trick-or-treating in the Barge-Chestnut area

The age-old tradition of trick-or-treating is alive and well in our valley – it’s one of our favorite holidays in Yakima, actually. And few neighborhoods celebrate as enthusiastically as Barge Chestnut. Thousands of kids are expected to wander down the streets, going house to house in search of goodies. We just love seeing all the many families out together. Most of the streets in the Barge Chestnut area are closed from 5-8pm to keep everyone safe. Keep an eye out for the little goblins and ghosts this evening. Happy Halloween!

Union Gap Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch

Looking for some good, clean Halloween fun? It doesn’t get much better than the Union Gap Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch. Our teen just spent five hours out there, had a blast, and didn’t get into any trouble. Best parts? While it’s family-friendly, the maze turns “scary” after 7pm, so be prepared to maybe scream a time or two. You can also rent campfire spots and watch the creepy movies they play. The Sixth Sense was up when the teen was there. He even said he’ll go again. If that’s not an endorsement, we don’t know what is. Bonus: it’s right by Jean’s Cottage Inn, which has a bit of a following. The tasty steaks are a deal and burgers are good.

"Equality" mural in Front Street shop Wildjay

We are loving the "Equality" mural in Front Street shop Wildjay. The mural, created by 21-year-old Esmeralda Vasquez, will be up in the shop until the end of the year. Then Wildjay owner Jadira Amaya will commission another mural that represents empowerment. Go visit Jadira (“Yadi”), check out the mural, and peruse her darling clothing shop. After, hop on over to Crafted, Norms, or Gilbert Cellars for some refreshments. Or, use our Downtown Guide to find a brand-new spot you haven’t visited yet. Support local, y’all.

Yakima Town Hall

Famous people are famous for a reason, right? They have experiences that we don’t have. They’ve lived different lives that we could learn from. What wisdom would Caroline Kennedy give you? Or Geena Davis? Or Walter Cronkite? Well, thanks to Yakima Town Hall, you don’t have to leave town to see speakers of this caliber. For nearly 47 years, the all-women, all-volunteer board brings world-renowned personalities to Yakima each year – speakers that even big cities have a hard time getting (Monica Lewinsky, for example, who is closing out the 2020 season). A season ticket is $85 (that’s to see ALL speakers), and Town Hall also gives over 150 students free seats to each show. Now that’s #girlpower.

La Casa Hogar

Step inside the doors of La Casa Hogar, and you know it’s exactly as its name implies: a home. Initially envisioned for Latina women and children to find community and pursue education, today, La Casa offers families in Yakima the chance to change their lives. Whether it’s pre-school kids in the Early-Learning program, adults working toward Citizenship (more than 1,100 have become US citizens since 2014), or taking computer, English or pre-GED classes in the Adult Education program (over 280 took part in 2018), La Casa is making an enormous impact, connecting Yakima families and cultures in a supportive, warm environment. La Casa Hogar: We heart you.

Yakima YWCA

The YWCA Yakima marks its 110th year in the Valley this year, proving their expert ability to adapt to the community around them. What started as a hostel for young women traveling solo, is now dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. It is the “largest provider of domestic violence services in central Washington,” and a powerful force in creating a safer community for each of us. It's a unique and invaluable resource for the Yakima Valley.

Orasella Maraschino Cherries

Yes, handcrafted in Seattle, but the -asella in "Orasella" grew up in the Yakima Valley and they source their delightful maraschino cherries from our orchards. Up your Shirley Temple game at your next dinner party with these morsels or better yet, peruse their featured recipes for inspiration. (There's a lot of decadent desserts we're filing away for winter baking frenzies.)

You can order online here. Also, these make GREAT gifts.

The Locals Guide to the Fresh Hop Ale Fest

Yakima’s Fresh Hop Ale Festival is Saturday, October 5th. It is routinely ranked one of the best beer festivals in the country, and for good reason: it’s a week-long celebration of our hop culture that culminates in a giant party with beer that is brewed with hops picked straight from the bines of Yakima Valley. YAY for #wegrowyourbeer.

We partnered with the Fresh Hop Group to create the first edition of a locals guide to the Festival. We hope it helps you navigate the week for you and your visiting friends. Or at the very least, you can learn how the proceeds impact our community, which is pretty cool. CHEERS to the incredible Yakima Valley! 🍻
